We have begun our THIRD Magic Tree House book for a read aloud. We all love them! Here is an example of how we made a connection to our character's feelings.
Our new favorite books (next to Edward Tulane) is the Magic Tree House series. We read the first book Dinosaurs before Dark last week and have started the third book Mummies in the Morning by now. This is a fun series that is at a DRA Level 24 and great for BOY readers. If your child IS at a DRA level 24 or higher consider checking some of these books out from your local library, or see if your child checked them out from our school library (many did!) If your child is not at that level, consider reading to him from these books to create interest in improving his reading!
We are starting to focus more on our reading effort in class- paying attention to only our books during reading time, making sure we are reading just right books, and making sure we are understanding what we read. To do this, we have begun to rate ourselves on a Reading Effort Rubric. See it below!
Students are involved in a "Smore Reading" challenge all month. They can complete Smores tickets at school and at home for reading 20 minutes. If you need more sent home, let us know! Here are some more reading activities this week!
Students are taught and encouraged to use the online card catalog in the Library to find books that are interesting to them. They have also been working on a Research project with Mrs. Thill.
We are teaching students to retell narrative text using multiple story parts. They are telling eh Character, the Problem, the feeling, the Plan to solve the problem and the Solution. Look how independent they can be when using their "Champ Checkers" with a partner! |
