Students have been working for two months on writing personal narratives. Some of our targets have been:
* Write an interesting topic sentence * Use transition words * Write a conclusion sentence * Add details with feelings * Add dialogue * Edit my writing We are now publishing a Halloween story that they students are very proud of. We are typing and decorating them to share with you at Parent Teacher conferences! Each week students practice spelling words by sorting them, alphabetizing them, writing them five times each, and writing them in sentences. At home they should be practicing too, with practice spelling tests, or by writing them many times! Students graph their spelling progress each week, so their performance SHOULD mean something to them, and me too!
As we prepare for the M-Step tests this year we will have many opportunities to "respond" to text. In our classroom, one way we do this is with our "Twitter" board. Students will occasionally have the opportunity to read a question and respond to a "tweet" on this interactive board. Here is what the students "tweeted" about the Rock Show:
We are continuing to work on writing Personal Narratives in our classroom. One of the targets we have learned about is using "Dialogue". Dialogue is writing about more than one person talking to each other. We use Quotation Marks to indicate Dialogue. Here are some lessons we have done in the classroom:
Each week students are given a topic to write about for Writing Fluency. Most of the time, it is a meaningful, relevant (and motivating!) topic. This week we wrote for SIX MINUTES about our field trip! The students were incredible with their writing! Ask your child how many words he wrote, and have him COMPARE that to previous weeks of writing. These third graders are all 24 days smarter!
